Tannery in Samos (2015-2021)
Greece is famous for its ancient monuments and archeological sites. Ruins of a different kind, namely industrial ruins are rarely found in Greece. Leather was processed on Samos in the coastal town of Karlovasi from 1880 until it was no longer profitable at some point in the 1930s. The production buildings including the machines are still sitting directly by the sea and were waiting to become an industrial monument. First pictures taken in July 2015, show that decay was already on its way but overall the place was somehow kept clean. In 2019 (black & white images) some traces of errosion can be seem when looking closely. The 7.0 Samos-Izmir earthquake (also known as the 2020 Aegean Sea Earthquake) struck on 30.1.2020 about 14 km northeast of Samos and sent the entire eara of the tanning factories into rubble. The 2021 images show the same buildings as in 2015 and 2019 while the majority of the damaged buildings are already completely demolished and removed.
On the flight to Samos (2015) I had the chance to sit in the cockpit as a guest: Including a spectacular approach route through the Greek islands. The pictures from the cockpit can be seen alongside the industrial pictures in a second photo gallery. The return flight was of course less exciting, only that with an hour before departure, I was the last person to check in and was personally greeted by the staff at the airport car parking place.
